According to Karla Morrison, Community Liaison Officer, Life Education Auckland West welcomes around 12,000 children each year into their high-tech mobile classrooms. Here, they explore big topics like healthy eating, mental wellbeing, resilience, the human body, friendships, and the dangers of harmful substances – all with Harold by their side.

‘By engaging and motivating the younger generation, we aim to inspire them to be strong advocates for being healthy with Harold,’ says Karla. With Harold leading the way, these young learners are inspired to become role models in their schools, families, and communities. The Auckland West region stretches from Mount Albert to Titirangi, Kumeu, Hobsonville and everywhere in between.
Each year, Life Education Auckland West supports at least 300 teachers of tamariki aged 5-13. Independent research shows how much schools value the expertise of Life Education’s specialist teachers. Karla says the programme can be tailored to meet the school's specific requirements.
And it’s also adapted to be relevant to different age groups. ‘New entrants often learn about recognising their emotions, being kind friends and respecting others,’ advises Karla. She adds that for older children in Years 6 and 7, the focus is on harmful substances and vaping or online safety and dealing with stress.

The Life Education Trust receives no government funding and relies on sponsorships and funding grants to continue its vital work. Funding of $20,000 from the Your West Support Fund will significantly contribute to operating expenses. ‘Our mobile classrooms are around 15 years old now, and maintenance costs are increasing,’ says Karla. The funding will help keep the show on the road and contribute to salaries and other operating expenses.
Karla says that schools that participate in the programme are charged a small fee to cover costs. However, the Life Education Trust is committed to providing at least three free visits to lower-decile schools each year, which otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate. There’s no doubt that Harold the Giraffe leaves a lasting impression that sticks with kids well beyond the classroom.
